Let’s face it. Trying to mix your own songs is frustrating.
So you’re a producer or artist and you want to take your music to the next level. You wanna get some radio play, some interviews, some media coverage… but your songs don’t have the exact same sound as the songs you hear on the radio. They don’t have that polish, that sparkle, that million dollar sound. You wonder why or how can this be. Well, my friend… I’m here to tell you. It’s time to hire a professional mix engineer.
Making music is one thing. Having a vision in your head for how your songs should be is a part of the creative process. But engineering is a highly technical field. Sure, adding delays to taste and reverbs where needed is a part of the creative process, but mixing, at it’s core, is founded upon mathematics, since most of it deals with frequencies and decibels. It’s that marriage of artistic and technical.
Engineering also is one part of the process that takes the longest to learn, and is the most difficult. That’s because there’s no shortcut to experience. It’s a sweet science in it’s own right, something like boxing. There’s pretty much nothing like getting hit in the face to teach you how to bob and weave. Hiring a mix engineer means you are hiring someone that has spent years not only mixIng records, but listening to trends, dealing with record labels and A&R’s, is familiar with exactly how to get a particular sound, which pieces of gear to use for what, etc.
So why should you hire a professional mix engineer to work on your song? Because you wouldn’t let your mother tailor your tuxedo for your wedding. And you shouldn’t let your curious side mix your records for your album. You owe it to yourself to let an engineer do an engineer’s work. After all; artist’s shouldn’t mix anymore than Dave Pensado shouldn’t be putting out a rap album anytime soon.
